2015 Perth Cup Results: Real Love Beats Red Blast

January 2nd, 2015

Adam Durrant’s classy mare Real Love could be eastern-state bound in this autumn after her gutsy all-the-way victory over Red Blast in the Perth Cup 2015 at Ascot Racecourse on New Year’s Day.

The four-year-old daughter of Desert King posted her third feature Perth Summer Racing Carnival victory on the trot on Thursday after digging deep to hold off two notable challenges in the $500,000 Group 2 Golden River Developments Perth Cup (2400m).

Two back the WA Oaks runner-up and WATC Derby third placegetter won the Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2200m) by 2.5 lengths before her final Perth Cup lead-up, a win in the Listed WA St Leger (2100m) on December 21.

Normally a get-back type of runner, a speedy jump from barrier four in the January 1 classic saw her and ace hoop William Pike find themselves in unfamiliar front-running territory.

Pike kept a cool head however and allowed Real Love to roll along with the predicted pacesetter Kirov Boy making a big move on the leader mid race after moving from the back of the field.

He won his previous start at the track over 2200m by a blistering 7 ¾ lengths and tried his heart out to get ahead of the short-priced $2.60 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au Real Love.

The gelding couldn’t match the mare approaching the turn however with Real Love shrugging him off before another challenge came, this time from CB Cox Stakes runner-up Red Blast.

”You can’t panic and it is what it is but it’s the last place I thought I would be,” winning jockey Pike told the Perth media on Thursday.

“But you can get away with it when you have a good horse who is in form.

“I thought Kirov Boy was going to go past us but she kicked and was very strong.”

Despite having already dug deep to account for Kirov Boy, Real Love hit another final gear at the top of the straight though and won the Perth Cup pulling away.

She had 1.5 lengths over the Daniel Morton-trained Red Blast ($9) by the winning post with another 1.25 lengths to spare over the brave third placed Kirov Boy ($13) who did well not to drop right out of the race.

Jockey Pike celebrated his second Perth Cup victory after his first victory a decade earlier aboard Crown Prosecutor (2005).

Crown Prosecutor and Real Love are now two of a total five Perth Cup winners for Perth’s dominant owner-breeder team of Bob and Sandra Peters whose other victories came with Field Officer (1993), the fellow Durrant-trained Lords Ransom (2010) and Western Jewel (December 2011).

Western Jewel and Talent Show (2013) were the two other most recent Perth Cup winning mares before Real Love who Durrant believes could be competitive interstate this coming autumn.

“She is showing exceptional things,” the Lark Hill-based horseman said.

“There is no reason why she couldn’t be competitive in the right race over east.”

A possible aim if she travels could be the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3220m) over the two miles at Morphettville in early March where last year’s Perth Cup champ Black Tycoon ran a close second in.
