It’s not hard to see why four-year-old mare Real Love is the firm favourite to win the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot Racecourse on New Year’s Day after finishing in the first two in all five of her starts this campaign.
Real Love opened as $2.60 in the Perth Cup betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au after winning both the Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2200m) and Listed WA St Leger (2100m) back to back.
Trainer Adam Durrant has revealed the mare pulled up well following her St Leger win on Saturday but he must now make sure she can stay sound over the next week before her biggest test in the 2015 Perth Cup.
“She has pulled up really good from the run,” he told Perth Racing.
“Two weeks is a long time in racing so I need to keep her in one piece, and it’s definitely not a one horse race.”
Durrant will also saddle seven-year-old Mr Moet in the Perth Cup on January 1. The gelding has been luckless in his three runs this campaign, finishing outside the placings in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), and Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m).
He did well to finish fifth in the CB Cox Stakes on Saturday after racing wide without cover for much of the race.
The $15 hopeful has been allocated the top weight of 59kg for the $500,000 Perth Cup, which has left Durrant doubting his chances.
“The run the other day was good without being flattering,” Durrant said.
“He can carry the weight (59kg), but his best might be behind him now.
“He’s a proven weight-for-age horse, and was only beaten three quarters of a length in the Mackinnon Stakes, and beaten two lengths in a Caulfield Cup.”
