2011 Perth Cup Start Unlikely For Ranger

December 20th, 2011

Ranger is unlikely to make any appearance in the 2011 Perth Cup on December 31, 2011, after failing to stay in the CB Cox Stakes last start.

The five-year-old gelding finished three and a half lengths behind the leader in third in the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes despite being the raging favourite for the race.

The Testa Rossa gelding is now expected to either head for a spell or contest some of the shorter distance races held during the remainder of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

“He has dropped only two points despite having been unplaced at five starts since he won the Perth Cup in January 2010,” owner Bob Peters said before his CB Cox Stakes run.

“Whether Ranger runs in the cup depends on how he goes on Saturday.”

The gelding has won over 2,100 metres in the past, however, is at his best over 1,400 metres and has won at this distance three times.

Ranger has won six of his 19 career starts and has earned more than $521,000 in prize money.

The horse is trained at Karnup by trainer Grant Williams, who will continue to place the horse amongst Group company.
