John Thompson’s Saint Encosta is likely to be the only eastern state representative in the Group 2 Perth Cup at Ascot on December 31, 2011.
The five-year-old has been aimed at this race since travelling to Perth to partake in the summer racing carnival.
The Encosta De Lago gelding has had two starts in Western Australia, with his first being a disappointing 12th in the Listed Tattersall’s Cup and the second being a close second in the Listed JRA Trophy on December 3.
“If the run had come a bit earlier he would have won,” Patinack racing manager Robyn Hartney said of Saint Encosta’s JRA Plate run.
“The Perth Cup has been the race we have set him for all along.”
Saint Encosta has won two of his 27 race starts and has earned just shy of $200,000 in prize money.
The gelding was purchased for $800,000 from the 2008 Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast.
In further 2011 Perth Cup horse racing news, jockey Dwayne Dunn has been booked to ride talented stayer Kincaple in the race.
Trainer Mark Reed was relieved to have booked the top jockey to ride Kincaple in both the Perth Cup 2011 and the 2011 CB Cox Stakes.
“Trying to find a jockey from Melbourne to ride in both races was tough,” Reed said.
Kincaple has won seven of his 25 career starts and has earned more than $300,000 in prize money.
The Pentire gelding is looking to win his first Group race after finishing seventh in the Group 1 Railway Stakes and ninth in the Group 1 Kingston Town Stakes last start.
